What is the CRG transition project?

The CRG transition project is identified as an action item in council’s Community Engagement Strategic Action Plan 2024-2028.

The project aims to ‘Re-align CRGs to recognise them as place-based community development and planning groups’.

The objective of the project is to enhance council’s ability to support and provide value to our community through CRGs. It’s about building community capacity and working together to make a positive impact on the places we call home.

    What will change?

As listed in the action plan, the CRG transition will include:

    • Re-focus of the groups’ purpose to progress community-led initiatives
    • Re-development of the terms of reference
    • Re-defining roles of participants; including council staff, councillors, and community
    • Plans to provide capacity building activities to support transition e.g., chairing, minute taking
    • A potential name change based on member feedback
    • Customer service requests being submitted via the CRM system by community, external to meetings

As we know, our communities are unique so the transition will look different for each group. CRGs that are already focused on community-led initiatives and local actions might not see much difference. Other groups will have more to talk about as the transition is discussed.

How will the transition take place?

Information gathered during the 2023 Community Engagement Review of council’s community engagement practices will be collated into a discussion paper.

This paper will be utilised to guide in-depth consultation with CRG Members through a series of Forums across the region in November 2024.

The forums will bring together multiple CRGs. This approach allows CRGs to meet collectively and discuss the transition - sharing their experiences, supporting each other and gaining insight into how each other’s groups work.

From these discussions, a transition plan for each CRG will be developed. The transition plans are expected to commence in 2025.

So you’re not shutting down CRGs?

Absolutely not! Please be assured that council are not seeking to shut down CRGs through this transition process.

Community development and engagement officers (CDEO's) will continue to support all CRGs, as well as the development and progress of community-led initiatives.

You sure can! Just contact your group’s CDEO directly or the community engagement team at engagement@chrc.qld.gov.au to discuss alternative ways to contribute to the discussion.
