Significant Tree Competition Prize Recipients

Central Highlands Regional Council launched the Significant Tree Competition to encourage Central Highlands residents to share their favourite trees to become part of council's Significant Tree Register.

The following prizes were available as part of the competition:

  • 2x Judge's Choice Awards - $200 each
  • 4x parks & Gardens Choice Award Prizes - $50 each

The recipients of the Judge's Choice prize are:

  • Kari Paton for the submission "River Guardian" coolabah tree at the bottom weir off Amethyst Drive, Emerald
  • Brett Truelson for the submission bottle tree located at 2 Mackenzie Street, Blackwater – location of the old Blackwater swimming pool behind CHRC office

The Parks & Gardens Choice Awards were selected by majority vote from the Parks & Gardens team members each selecting their favourite entry. This was a great way to include the outdoor staff in the initiative as they are the hands on team members who work with some of these trees each and every day. The following submissions were awarded this prize:

  • Tracey Wallin – Tree planted during Bauhinia Shire Council Centenary celebrations in 1959 – located at the Springsure Skatepark Cr Eclipse & Leichardt Street Springsure
  • Laura Clarke – Tree planted at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Primary School many years ago. Significant to the staff and the students past and present of the school
  • That Emerald Photographer – Tree symbolising the resilience and beauty of the Central Highlands – located on the Capricorn Highway (clearly visible from the road) heading towards Anakie
  • Amber (Have Your Say entry had no last name, can we get a last name confirmed?) – Huge shady tree near the playground at Roy Day Park. Regularly used by families for picnics and BBQ’s & resting wildlife – Anakie-Sapphire Road, Sapphire

These trees are visible on the submissions map. Thank you to everyone who took part in the competition.

While the competition is now closed, submissions are still open to nominate a tree for the Significant Tree Register. Head to the top of the page for instructions on how to make a submission.
