What is the Blackwater Library Project?
The Blackwater Library Project is an initiative to construct a new library facility in Blackwater. The new library will provide a multi-purpose space that offers opportunities to relax, learn, connect and discover. The project will deliver:
· A new library building designed to support community needs.
· Equitable access for all abilities and all ages.
· Wheelchair friendly areas and toilet facilities.
· Spaces for inclusive fun and educational events, programs and services.
· Support for local people and attractions for visitors.
· Support for arts, culture and heritage activities.
Where will the new facility be located?
The best location for the new facility is under consideration. Initial plans were to locate the facility near the Blackwater Council Office, on Wey Street. Further feasibility studies are now being conducted.
Why is the new facility required?
Council has received reports on the condition of the existing Blackwater Library, which indicate there is a need for the existing building to be demolished in the near future. There are no suitable facilities within the local area that can accommodate the library, therefore there is a need to develop a new library facility.
Why is the library an important facility?
Libraries provide a secure and quiet environment for people of all ages. The Blackwater Library received over 16,000 visitors in 2018 and hosts many popular activities such as Story Time, sensory play and school holiday activities. The library is also Blackwater’s "one stop shop" for internet, printing and scanning.
