What is a Smart Community?
A Smart Community uses digital technology, data and innovation to make our lives easier, more efficient, sustainable and connected. A Smart Community aims to prioritise the needs and concerns of the citizens and provide digital and innovative solutions.
Council are seeking your assistance in identifying areas of opportunity in the Central Highlands that can be improved by integrating smart technologies and ideas.
Smart community solutions
Wi-fi: To keep our community connected.
Smart environmental meters: To help monitor our environment, eg. Smart irrigation that measures multiple variables to irrigate efficiently.
Phone applications: To keep us informed and connected, eg. smart phone applications that allow citizens to report issues such as pot holes, broken street lights, full bins etc.
Real-time data and analytics: To assist in decision making, eg. real time data on tourism, traffic and weather.
Open data: To promote innovation and transparency, eg. information about your local area (air quality, traffic conditions, humidity) available to everyone in the community.
Smart street lighting: To increase safety and efficiency, eg. street lights that can turn themselves on in response to light availability and motion.
Innovation: To create new ideas and process usually to increase efficiency or improve lives, eg. using drones to monitor crops and livestock and manage extreme weather conditions.
Co-design with citizens: To provide solutions for our community, and improve citizen participation, eg. engaging with the local community to plan how the Central Highlands can become a smart community.
Central Highlands Regional Council is committed to using smart technology in a strategic way. Our strategy will align with national and state government policies, including the national Smart Cities Plan.
